The Top 5 Design Questions You Asked at the Sydney Home Show

Mar 25, 2024Richard Woods

With another year done and dusted for the Sydney Home Show, we’re returning with some new design inspiration and a stack of fresh Evergreen Walls advocates. Hundreds of you stopped by our booth to say hello, and most of you had burning design questions to get off your chest.

Here are the top five design questions you asked at the Sydney Home Show.

1. “How do I hide a Colorbond fence?"

Colorbond steel might be some of the sturdiest and most weather-resistant on the market, but it can be an imposing feature, especially in smaller spaces. Several of you asked for advice on partly or completely concealing your Colorbond fence with one of our artificial green walls.

The good news? Our panels are easy to install to Colourbond fences, as you can see in our green wall installation guide. Simply use metal screws, black cable ties or a timber frame to hold your green wall in place.

There are many benefits of using artificial plants vs real plants in your outdoor space:

  • No maintenance costs
  • Appear fresh and vibrant all year round
  • Doesn‚Äôt require potentially harmful pesticides
  • Mess-free
  • Doesn‚Äôt attract insects
  • Doesn‚Äôt cause allergic reactions

2. “How do I add greenery to a kitchen splashback?”

There are a lot of options when it comes to bringing your kitchen design to life with a splashback feature.  Coloured tiles, wood panelling and textured glass are all time-tested design choices.

But judging by the number of inquiries about incorporating greenery, it’s safe to say that window splashbacks are currently on trend.

Window splashbacks allow you to open up the space and create an airy, natural feel to the room, especially when opening onto a garden or patio area. But peek windows that open into simple wall cavities can be equally as impressive.

Install your artificial green wall in the window cavity and enjoy a vibrant kitchen aesthetic without the maintenance.

3. “How do you bring nature into a kitchen?"

Following on from your splashback questions, we had a lot of visitors ask us how best to use natural elements when designing a kitchen. Contending with heat, oil, steam and stains, it‚Äôs not always easy to maintain the appearance of natural elements like living plants.

But with a few intelligent design choices, you can bring nature into your kitchen design. Earthy tones for your wall colours, natural timber furnishings, stone countertops and floral features can all create a natural ambience.

4. “How to make a big impact with a small space?”

For those of you working with smaller spaces, your design choices can seem limited. Whether it’s an apartment balcony, a small home office or bedroom, if you’re low on room, intelligent design choices become especially important.

Smaller spaces can mean making sacrifices. Foregoing the coffee table, making use of the counter space you have, or thinking multi-purpose. But you can still make a big impact with smaller spaces by focusing attention on a few carefully-placed feature items.

Circular planter disks can be a high-impact piece in a small area, and are less imposing than a painted feature wall.

5. ‚ÄúHow do we improve our outdoor entertaining area?‚Äù

With barbecue season upon us, it‚Äôs no surprise that a lot of you asked about improving your existing entertaining spaces. The possibilities are endless in outdoor entertaining, but your additions will depend on your budget.

Quality decking, smart technologies like wireless speakers and lighting, and even outdoor kitchens can all bring an extra element to your existing entertainment area. And of course, vertical garden walls are a perfect candidate for bringing an under-utilised wall space to life.

We’d like to thank all of you who stopped by our booth at the Sydney Home Show - we hope to see you all again next year.
